Dear Classic Car Enthusiasts, Collectors and Followers,
For many years, April has been a great month for classic cars events. One of these is the well-known Essen Techno Classic, which has unfortunately become smaller and smaller after 2020; of course, its attendance has suffered accordingly.
This year will be the last for the exhibition to be held at the usual great location and by the long-running organisers, before a new location and new organisers take over.
A couple of other events have out-classed what used to be the biggest and best classic car show in Europe, with Maastricht and Stuttgart achieving more footfall and a great overall selection of classics.
As new organisers take over in 2026, it will be interesting to see how it turns out.
April is also a month to meet up with clients, dealers and old friends, putting the classic car world to rights, discussing what's selling and what to stay away from.
It was good to see such great cars on display and what, among those, was selling over the five days. Needless to say, an apparent lack of British contingent meant that most of the cars on display were Mercedes and Porsche models.
After the German stint, a long drive back followed, to the ever-growing and exciting Goodwood Members’ Meeting, which is, as always, a great show.
The auction world is still marching on with packed catalogues, but are they really working in today's market?
It seems that if you fill an auction room with many lots you will have some success but fill it without the appropriate buying audience and you will struggle, as we have seen recently. How long can this last, will the market suffer further with armchair experts reporting on values dropping as a result?
It is a shame to see good cars not selling well, because a model’s value is then set at the highest bid it receives on the day.
Let this be a general warning, that if your car does not sell at auction, or sells for below the hoped-for value, it may be tarnished, as the internet will show its latest bid as the to-go-for ‘standard’.
Also, please be aware of hoax traders, as we are seeing more and more of these lately, the ubiquitous so-called specialists with cars which do not belong to them or do not even exist (!); this is a growing concern for all.
If you are thinking of selling your classic or thinking of buying something special, as well as considering a restoration project, we are here to assist.
Happy motoring and drive safely.
