Jaguar XK120 Coupe

Jaguar XK120 Coupe

The 1952 Jaguar XK120 Fixed Head Coupé is one of the cars that transformed Jaguar from a respected British manufacturer into a global performance icon. It combined elegant styling, remarkable speed, and advanced engineering at a price that undercut many rivals.

Origins: A surprise that became a legend

The story begins just after World War II. William Lyons, Jaguar's founder, wanted to showcase the company's new twin-cam six-cylinder engine—the XK engine. The original plan was simply to build a limited number of sports cars to demonstrate the engine.

When the prototype debuted at the 1948 London Motor Show, the public response was overwhelming. Demand was so high that Jaguar abandoned the idea of a short production run and put the XK120 into full-scale production.

The "120" in the name referred to its claimed top speed of 120 mph (193 km/h), making it the fastest production car in the world at the time.

Engineering ahead of its time

At the heart of every XK120 was Jaguar's legendary 3.4-litre DOHC inline-six engine.

Key specifications for a typical 1952 coupe:

  • Engine: 3.4 L XK inline-six
  • Power: about 160 hp
  • Top speed: approximately 120 mph
  • 4-speed manual transmission
  • Rear-wheel drive
  • Independent front suspension
  • Hydraulic brakes

The XK engine itself became one of the greatest engines in automotive history, remaining in production—with continual improvements—for over four decades.

The arrival of the Fixed Head Coupé

The original XK120 was a roadster. In 1951 Jaguar introduced the Fixed Head Coupé (FHC), and by 1952 it had become a favorite among buyers wanting greater comfort.

The coupe offered:

  • A steel roof for improved weather protection
  • Better sound insulation
  • Roll-up windows
  • A beautifully finished interior with leather, walnut veneer, and classic Smiths gauges
  • Better long-distance touring capability

Many enthusiasts today consider the Fixed Head Coupé one of the prettiest closed sports cars ever built, with its graceful roofline flowing seamlessly into the rear fenders.

Racing heritage

Although the coupe was more refined than the open roadster, the XK120's reputation was built on competition.

The XK120 achieved success in:

  • 24 Hours of Le Mans
  • Mille Miglia
  • Alpine Rally
  • Numerous American sports car races

Drivers praised its combination of high speed and reliability.

One of the car's most famous achievements came in 1949 when a lightly modified XK120 averaged over 132 mph during speed runs on a Belgian motorway, proving Jaguar's performance claims were conservative.

Hollywood glamour

The XK120 quickly became associated with celebrities and successful professionals.

Owners included stars such as Clark Gable and Humphrey Bogart. The car's combination of speed and elegance made it a symbol of post-war optimism and sophistication.

Production changes by 1952

A 1952 model benefits from several refinements over the earliest cars:

  • Steel body construction (the earliest 1948–49 cars had aluminum bodies over ash frames)
  • Improved cooling
  • Better weather sealing
  • More refined interior appointments
  • Continued mechanical improvements that enhanced reliability

These updates make 1952 examples particularly desirable because they retain the classic styling while being more practical to drive.

Why collectors love the 1952 model

Collectors value the 1952 XK120 Fixed Head Coupé because it represents:

  • The birth of Jaguar as a world-class sports car maker
  • One of the most beautiful British automotive designs
  • The debut era of the legendary XK engine
  • A car equally at home touring across Europe or competing in motorsport

Well-restored examples are admired not only for their beauty but also because they remain surprisingly enjoyable to drive, with smooth power delivery and a distinctive exhaust note.

Lasting legacy

The XK120 directly led to the XK140 and XK150, and its engine powered Jaguar's famous C-Type and D-Type racing cars, which dominated endurance racing in the 1950s. It also laid the engineering foundation for the iconic Jaguar E-Type.

Today, the 1952 XK120 Fixed Head Coupé is regarded as one of the defining grand touring cars of the post-war era—a machine that combined beauty, innovation, and performance in a way that helped establish Jaguar as one of the world's premier sports car manufacturers.

History & Provenance

This outstanding 1952 Jaguar XK120 Fixed Head Coupé was supplied new in Los Angeles, California, through renowned Jaguar distributor Clyde W. King, one of the marque's principal West Coast dealers during the early 1950s. The first recorded owner was Mr H. E. Bauer, who took delivery of the car in 1952.

Whilst little is known of its early years in the United States, the XK120 was later entrusted to the highly respected Jon Pollock Restorations, where it underwent a comprehensive, no-expense-spared restoration to concours standard. Every aspect of the restoration was completed with meticulous attention to detail, resulting in a beautifully presented example that faithfully retains the elegance and character of Jaguar's celebrated post-war sports car.

Following completion, the Jaguar was invited to and displayed at a number of prestigious concours events, where the quality of the restoration was widely admired.

In 2020, the car was acquired by an enthusiast in Italy before becoming part of the renowned Houtkamp Collection, one of Europe's finest collections of significant historic motor cars. It was subsequently purchased by its current owner in the United Kingdom.

Prior to participating in the 2021 Mille Miglia, the XK120 was carefully prepared for the event, where it completed the demanding thousand-mile route without fault, proving not only the quality of its restoration but also the inherent reliability and touring capability for which the XK120 has long been celebrated.

Since then, the car has continued to be maintained to an exceptional standard and remains in outstanding condition throughout. Thoughtfully upgraded for modern touring, it benefits from a number of discreet improvements that greatly enhance the driving experience without detracting from its character. These include a five-speed gearbox, which perfectly complements the smooth and powerful XK engine, electric power steering for lighter low-speed manoeuvring, and electric cooling fans to improve performance in modern traffic. Together, these carefully considered enhancements make the car a genuine pleasure to drive over long distances.

Having thoroughly enjoyed the Jaguar, its current owner has now decided to offer it for sale, presenting a rare opportunity to acquire a beautifully restored, Mille Miglia-proven XK120 Fixed Head Coupé with distinguished provenance, exceptional presentation and the sort of practical upgrades that make it equally suited to concours events, historic rallies or grand touring across Europe.
