Dear Classic Car Enthusiasts, Collectors and Followers
The British weather really came into its own at Goodwood; it appears that Lord March had forgotten to order the Goodwood special blend of elements, but never mind! The event was as glamours as always, regardless.
September was a great month for events with several of them unavoidably clashing, and trying to attend as many as possible was hectic and exciting, if not a tad stressful.
So much to see and report on, from new classics (not seen/categorised as such before) to classic cars never seen before, even for seasoned experts like us at Classicmobilia.
It was amazing to see some of the cars which were shown at Pebble Beach in the USA the previous month, arriving in London a few weeks later to be displayed again. As always, much gratitude to the owners for making that possible.
In the last few months, we have seen several personal and professional ownership changes withing the auction world. Is this an isolated phenomenon, or the start of major upheaval? We shall see.
The few mergers we have witnessed may result in either larger auctions or more specialist platforms. Time will tell, but let’s just hope the overstocked scenario with substandard cars will not affect the overall classic car market offering.
Online auctions are still growing, more new start-ups are being launched monthly, yet we have no reliable records of what has sold and what has not. The quality of some of the on-line cars for sale is quite questionable and hard to check: if you are thinking of placing a bid, do your homework thoroughly.
The classic car market is a little like a roller-coaster, we have seen peaks where sales have been flying and troughs with the telephone just not ringing, sales departments quiet one week and busy the next, and there seems to be no rhyme or reason for this apart from the ebbs and flows of life.
We have also seen marques like Porsche doing well and others, like Jaguar, slowing down. There is a range of reasons why that may be so, but in general, looking back over the years, this has been the going trend and pattern, and it will all come back again.
Restoration and repair shops are doing well, with some well-known specialists with record lead times to get work in, but we have seen problems with special parts supply and relevant prices escalating, due to new part manufacturing issues.
If you are considering buying or selling a classic car and you would like some good friendly advice, or if you are considering restoring your classic and just need some assistance, let us know. We are always here to help.
Happy motoring
Keith
